Fight, Flight, Freeze: Understanding Your Body's Stress Response
Your body's threat response isn't a malfunction — it's ancient survival machinery firing on time. Here's what fight, flight, freeze and fawn actually do, and why naming your state is the first move.
The email landed at 4:47 on a Friday. Two lines from a client, the tone clipped, the words “we need to talk” sitting there like a stone. And before my conscious mind had finished reading, my body had already decided what this was. My chest tightened. My jaw clenched. My hands went cold and my heart started thumping against my ribs as if I’d sprinted up a flight of stairs.
Nothing had happened. No one had shouted. There was no tiger, no cliff edge, no threat I could point to. Just pixels on a screen. And yet every system in my body had braced for impact, faster than thought, faster than I could stop it.
That gap — between the harmless thing in front of you and the full-body alarm it triggers — is where most of us misunderstand ourselves. We think we’re overreacting. We think something is wrong with us. But what’s actually happening is older, cleaner and far more sensible than that. Your body isn’t broken. It’s doing precisely what it evolved to do.
The alarm goes off before you do
Deep in the brain, roughly level with your ears, sits a small almond-shaped structure called the amygdala. Think of it as a smoke detector. Its only job is to scan everything coming in — sights, sounds, a tone of voice, a curt email — and ask one question, constantly, beneath your awareness: is this a threat?
It is fast and it is crude. The amygdala doesn’t wait for the full story. It works on pattern and association, firing on the first hint of danger and asking questions later. This is by design. For most of human history, the cost of overreacting to a rustle in the grass was a moment of wasted adrenaline. The cost of underreacting was being eaten. So evolution built us to jump first.
When the amygdala decides something is a threat, it doesn’t politely consult the rest of the brain. It hits the alarm. Signals fire down to the hypothalamus, which triggers the sympathetic nervous system — the body’s accelerator pedal — and within a second or two you are flooded.
What the flood actually does
Two chemicals lead the charge. Adrenaline goes first, fast and electric: your heart rate climbs, your airways open, blood rushes from your gut and skin toward the big muscles of your arms and legs. Then cortisol follows, the slower-burning stress hormone, releasing glucose into the bloodstream to keep the engine running.
This is why your hands go cold and your stomach drops. Blood is being rerouted away from anything that isn’t immediately useful for survival — digestion, fine motor control, careful thought — and toward the systems that help you act. Your body is, quite literally, preparing to fight something or run from it.
And here’s the part that trips everyone up: it does all this whether the threat is a predator or a passive-aggressive email. The machinery can’t tell the difference. It only knows the alarm went off.
The four states — and the logic underneath each
We call it “fight or flight”, but that’s shorthand. The threat response has at least four settings, and each one carries its own ancient logic. None of them is a flaw. Each is a strategy that kept your ancestors alive long enough to become you.
Fight
Heat rises in your chest. Your jaw sets, your shoulders square, your voice gets louder or sharper than you intended. You feel the urge to push back, to argue, to win.
Fight is the response that says: this threat can be overpowered. It’s the body mobilising aggression to remove the danger. In the wrong context — a meeting, a marriage, a comment thread — it looks like a short fuse. But the underlying calculation is simple and old: stand your ground, and make the threat back down.
Flight
A restless, buzzing energy. The urge to leave the room, end the conversation, change the subject, get out. Your eyes flick toward the exits. Your legs feel like they want to move without you.
Flight says: this threat can be escaped. When fighting looks like losing, the smarter move is distance. In modern life it shows up as avoidance — the unanswered email, the cancelled plan, the conversation you keep putting off. Not cowardice. Calculation.
Freeze
This one confuses people most, because it feels like the opposite of action. Your body goes still. Your mind goes blank. You can’t find words, can’t decide, can’t move. People describe it as going numb, or watching themselves from a distance.
Freeze says: this threat can’t be fought or outrun, so go quiet and wait. It’s the rabbit flattening into the grass, the prey animal playing dead. The thinking is brutal and effective — a predator’s eye is drawn to movement, so stillness is survival. Freeze isn’t weakness. It’s the oldest defence of all, and it kicks in precisely when the other two seem hopeless.
Fawn
A quieter, more social fourth response, and one worth naming. Fawn is the impulse to appease — to smooth things over, agree too quickly, manage the other person’s mood so the threat dissolves before it lands.
Fawn says: this threat is another person, so keep them happy and stay safe. It’s especially common in those who grew up where conflict felt dangerous. On the surface it looks like kindness or easy-going-ness. Underneath, it’s the same alarm, the same survival arithmetic — just pointed at a social danger rather than a physical one.
Why your clever brain goes offline
Here’s the cruel joke at the centre of all this. The moment you most need to think clearly — to find the right words, weigh the options, stay reasonable — is the exact moment your thinking brain steps back.
When the amygdala fires hard enough, it effectively turns down the volume on the prefrontal cortex, the slow, deliberate, rational part of the brain behind your forehead. The reasoning is sound, in evolutionary terms. When a predator lunges, you don’t have time for a thoughtful cost-benefit analysis. Reflection is a luxury, and luxuries get cut when the alarm is screaming.
So you say the thing you regret. You go blank in the argument and think of the perfect reply an hour later. You freeze when you meant to speak. None of that is a character defect. It’s your nervous system doing triage, sacrificing nuance for speed because, somewhere in your evolutionary past, speed was the thing that kept you breathing.
The first move is simply naming it
If your body fires this alarm automatically, faster than thought, what hope do you have of changing it?
More than you’d think — but it starts somewhere unglamorous. Not with controlling the response. With recognising it.
The next time your chest tightens and the heat rises, try naming the state under your breath. That’s fight. That’s flight. I’ve gone into freeze. It sounds almost too simple to matter. But the act of labelling does something measurable in the brain — it gently re-engages that quiet prefrontal cortex, the very part that went offline. You can’t reason your way out of a state you haven’t noticed you’re in. Naming it is the foot back in the door.
This is the whole basis of learning to calm a hijacked nervous system — and it’s why awareness comes before any technique. You’re not trying to stop the alarm from ever sounding. You’re learning to recognise the sound, so you can choose what happens next instead of being swept along by it.
